Dal dhokli is a healthy one-pot meal. Spiced whole wheat flour dhoklis are simmered in toor dal. It’s traditional Gujarati delicacy often made as a sunday lunch. Dal is a good source of protein combined with whole wheat dhokli makes this a very healthy recipe. Enjoy dal dhokli!

Method:

  1. In a pressure cooker, add dal and 2 cups of water.
  2. Cook for 4 to 5 whistles turn off heat.
  3. Meanwhile, in a big bowl mix all ingredients.
  4. Add water little by little and make a semi soft dough.
  5. Cover and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  6. Break into 6 equal portions, shape into ball and flatten it, keep aside.
  7. Let the pressure cooker cool down for 10 minutes, allowing steam to escape before opening the pressure cooker lid.
  8. Remove lid and add turmeric powder, coriander-cumin powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, jaggery and salt.
  9. Blend all ingredients together, until smooth using a hand blender or immersion blender.
  10. Heat big pot on medium high, add oil, cumin seeds, wait till seeds crackle.
  11. Add dried whole red chili, cloves, cinnamon and asafoetida, give it a quick stir.
  12. Add blended dal, 3 cups of water, peanuts, tomato, ginger, green chili and curry leaves, mix well.
  13. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  14. Roll out each flattened dough into very thin roti(about 7 to 8 inches circle).
  15. Cut dough into square or diamond shapes about 1 inch pieces, using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  16. Slowly add the dhokli pieces one by one to boiling dal, and mix gently.
  17. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes or until dhokli is tender, while stirring occasionally.
  18. Garnish wtih cilantro and pomegranate seeds.
  19. Serve immediately. Enjoy dal dhokli with rice or papad.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Toor Dal (split pegion peas)
  • 2 Tablespoons Raw Peanuts
  • 1 Small Tomato, diced
  • 3 to 4 Curry Leaves
  • 1 Teaspoon Ginger, grated
  • 2 Green Chilies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 2 Teaspoons Coriander-Cumin Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • A pinch of Garam Masala Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Jaggery (Gud)
  • Salt to Taste
  • 2 Tablespoons Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 1 Dried Whole Red Chili
  • 2 to 3 Cloves (Laving)
  • 1 inch sitck of Cinnamon
  • A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • For Dough:
  • 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 2 Teaspoons Coriander-Cumin Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to Taste
  • To Garnish:
  • 2 Tablespoons Cilantro (Coriander Leaves), finely chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons Pomegranate Seeds
